Email Marketing – What Each Message Needs To Say

To initiate email marketing, you need to create a series of follow-up letters after a subscriber signs up for your newsletter.

The following describes the types of messages you should send in your sequence…

1st email – (The Instant Response) – In your first follow up email, give the subscriber a download link and then say “Thank you,” for their patronage. You can also send them contact information in the event they have questions about your product. Cement this by providing links to your customer service department, assuming you have one.

2nd email – (Send Three Days After 1st email) – Ask your customers if they successfully downloaded your product. Remind them you are always available for questions or troubleshooting advice. Provide your customer service links one more time in case they lost your first follow up email.

3rd email – (Send Ten Days After 1st email) – This follow up email needs to discuss why your product is worthwhile. In the case of e-books, point them to a page number that contains the most pertinent information. For physical products, tell the subscriber how the item can improve their situation.

4th email – (Send Twenty Days After 1st email) – Here you want to answer any questions regarding your merchandise. If you are promoting something new, get someone in your family to review it and see if they have any questions. Alternatively, you can see what is being said for competing items. All you have to do is research you competitors’ websites. If this is not enough, consider offering a survey to your subscribers. In the survey, ask them about any questions they might have. Give them another free product if they answer the survey in its entirety.

By doing this, you will better understand what customers are thinking as they are using your product.

5th email – (Send Thirty Days After 1st email) – In your final follow up email, you need to offer a bonus to your subscriber. Digital products are the easiest, since they do not require money to make. If you have specialized knowledge that would be helpful to your niche, talk about it in an e-book. Even better, try to design your e-book in a way that makes it viral. In the olden days, those engaged in email marketing would use affiliate commissions as a way of creating buzz for their e-books. However, nowadays you have to be more creative. Perhaps you could offer a subscriber a free 3D TV if they can get 100 more people on your list. Or maybe you could simply give them another hot-topic e-book for free. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you keep things fun.

Remember, the average person is not aiming to be a marketer. However, if they can get a nice freebie in exchange for telling their friends and family about your product, chances are they will start talking.
